The story begins in the summer of 2022, at a summer music festival in Germany, sponsored by iSchool of Music and Art . Among the many young musicians attending was Keira, a student from Evergreen Charter School as well as Phoebe, a Juilliard Pre-College student. Keira talked to Phoebe about how limited the music education was at her high school, and Phoebe was willing to help. After the festival ended, Phoebe began mentoring students at Evergreen Charter School, a school located in Hempstead, New York, serving primarily low-income Hispanic and African American families.
Several months later, Phoebe was joined by her Juilliard Pre-College peer, Norman, who shared her passion for making music education accessible. What started as a solo effort soon grew into a collective mission. Together, they organized weekly group lessons, pouring their time and energy into nurturing the talents of Evergreen’s budding musicians.
Over the past two years, the Juilliard Pre-College students have transformed their mentoring into a sustainable program. They’ve not only provided consistent guidance to the Evergreen high school orchestra but have also created opportunities for its members to shine in benefit concerts. Today, the Evergreen high school orchestra, now mentored under the umbrella of Evergreen Inspiration Inc., consists of about 30 young musicians—many of whom have little to no access to private music education.
Through our efforts, we are proving that music has the power to transcend boundaries, uplift communities, and unlock potential in the most unexpected places. What began as a conversation in Germany has blossomed into a story of inspiration and opportunity—one note, one lesson, and one concert at a time.
